Courses & Degree Levels
An associate’s degree from an American Medical Veterinary Association (AMVA) accredited program is sufficient for most entry-level vet tech jobs. A background heavy in math, science, and biology is suggested to prepare students for the technical aspects of the curriculum. Classes focus on anatomy and physiology, imaging, parasitology, and agriculture to name a few with most classes requiring a base understanding of the sciences. Earning potential for a vet tech graduate are, the median hourly earnings of veterinary technicians was $12.88 in May 2006 with the middle 50 percent earning between $10.44 and $15.77. The job stability insulation from the frugality of the market means that veterinary technicians can enjoy significant job security.
