Electrical Degrees

Those working in the electrical trade provide services that are invaluable to virtually all other fields, ensuring that businesses and public services remain up and running. The job usually involves installing the wiring
and other components that allow electricity to power a business, home or factory. It can also mean maintaining and repairing these systems as well, should any malfunction occur. A degree in this field will prepare students for both installation and maintenance work, making sure students have a firm understanding of how to work on electrical systems safely and efficiently. In many cases, students will emerge from the program
with the skills necessary to take on a new job or to begin an engaging and educational apprenticeship
under a more experienced electrician.

Degrees in the electrical fields can vary depending on the type of work the student would like to do. In many cases, all that is required is an Associate’s Degree in the field but most students will engage in a lengthy apprenticeship program as well that will help them get the hands on knowledge they need to work as an electrician. During classroom instruction students can expect to take courses on Reading Blueprints, Electrical Theory, Mathematics, Code Requirements, and Safety and First Aid Procedures. This in classroom training will form the foundation for the work students do in the field as an apprentice. This hands-on training will educate students in the more practical aspects of the day to day work as an electrician. Additionally, students may opt to take courses during their training that will prepare them to be managers and contractors, allowing them greater potential for advancement in the field.

Job prospects for electricians should be very good in the coming years, as there will always be a demand for qualified individuals to install and maintain the electrical systems that form the backbone of commerce, communication, transportation and more. Those who learn additional skills in their training dealing with the latest technologies will have an edge in the field and will likely have little trouble finding work. While the majority of electricians work with larger construction companies, many own their own businesses as well and this can be a definite possibility for those with the requisite business skills and experience. Graduates of an electrical degree program should keep their options open for work in the automotive and electronics industries as well, as this can provide valuable options when searching for a job. While construction fluctuates with the economy, most electricians should have little difficulty finding work in the coming years, especially in some of the faster growing regions of the country.
