Online Law Degrees
Basic Degree Info
Students who’ve always wanted to pursue a career as
a lawyer may be able to do so in the online environment now, making it easier to maintain a job and personal responsibilities while attending school when it’s most convenient. While students will have more flexibility in when and where they do their coursework, online law degree programs generally differ little from their brick and mortar counterparts when it comes to what is expected of students. Of course not all online programs necessarily culminate in becoming a lawyer; many provide excellent training and certification for those working more generally in the law field including law enforcement, paralegals, and legal studies. These programs will help students to learn the terminology, laws and professional information they’ll need to excel
in their area of choice.
Courses & Degree Levels
What degree levels are offered in online law programs will depend largely on what the student wants to do with the degree. Those hoping to enter a Juris Doctor Degree will need to have already earned their Bachelor’s degree as the JD is a professional degree. While programs like these usually take about 4 years to complete there are a number of other, faster options out there for those who are interested in law but don’t want to be a lawyer. Some students will want to pursue the Executive JD degree, also for those with a Bachelor’s, to supplement their knowledge of business and legal issues. Bachelor’s degrees are offered in legal studies as well, a degree that can help those doing legal research or paralegal work. Finally, students will find opportunities to work towards a Master’s degree in Law at certain online colleges, with courses that are designed to help those in the legal support professions. Depending on the degree program, students can expect to take courses on topics like Ethics and Social Justice, Managerial Law, Legal Research and Writing and more, though coursework will vary widely depending on the student’s interests and ultimate goals.
Job Outlook
A degree in a law related field can open up a lot of doors for students, and those living in the often overly litigious United States will find a wealth of job opportunities as lawyers and paralegals. For lawyers, while there are numerous jobs available competition for them is stiff as thousands of students graduate from law schools each year. Many students will want to enter into a private law firm or maybe even start their own once they get a little experience under their belts. Those working in the paralegal or legal assistantship fields may fare a little easier on the job market. The job market for these careers is supposed to grow quickly in the coming years as law firms cut costs by having paralegals do work once done by lawyers.
