• Kayla Calvert of KPBS reports that Karen Cadiero-Kaplan will go from “Studying Policy to Shaping It” as she moves from a position preparing bilingual teachers to the first leader of the California Department of Education’s English Learner Support Division.
• Meanwhile, John Vucetich, a wildlife ecologist, will join Rolf Peterson, a retired professor, for the 54th annual wolf-moose Winter Study at Isle Royale National Park in northern Michigan; both are from Michigan Technological University. The two will spend seven weeks studying these magnificent animals in the wild.
• Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine Professor Jack Lipton will share his expertise in Parkinson’s research tomorrow, January 18th, at 9 PM with a full house at the Towsley Auditorium in Mid-Michigan Medical Center in Saginaw, Michigan. The event will also broadcast live within Saginaw Valley State University’s Ott Auditorium.
• Dr. Sumeet Dua of Louisiana Tech University has co-edited a book entitled: Computational Analysis of the Human Eye with Applications that should provide valuable guidance to ophthalmologists on using innovative computer techniques to improve eye care for their patients.
• Fifty-five year old Jonathan Matthews, an education professor at Carroll College, is headed to the Olympic race walking trials in San Diego. At twice the age of most competitors, Matthews holds the third fastest time among the competitors.
