Online Environmental Science Degrees

As society becomes more and more aware of the human impact upon the earth and the effects of that impact, environmental science will continue to become a larger and more profitable field. Environmental science doesn’t only look at the human impact upon the world though. It also looks
at how ecosystems change and interact, how animal populations grow and shrink and how atmospheric changes affect weather, just to name a few. Environmental science differs from environmental studies in that there will be a stronger foundation in the physical sciences and differs from individual science degrees in that it will not focus solely on biology or chemistry for example, but on how all of these disciplines interact to affect the environment in which we live. A strong foundation in the physical and chemical sciences will be the basis for any science degree, with courses in biology, chemistry, and physics with additional courses in geology, geography and earth science. Environmental science will also include the study of ecology and water systems, statistics, and environmental policy studies. Depending on the specific aims of each program, more advanced courses may be offered in oceanic studies, marine biology, computers, waste management or fire science. If students are interested in governmental regulations that have to do with environmental policy, classes are also offered in EPA rules and regulations. Environmental science is a prerequisite for a number of graduate degrees as well. Graduate programs usually specialize in one area of environmental science and will allow the student to design and carry out his or her own research, lead teams in breakthrough studies on different aspects of the environment, or enter academia.

With jobs ranging from environmental inspection for corporations looking to comply with state and federal regulations to working directly for the Environmental Protection Agency or a host of other non-governmental organizations, there are a plethora of jobs available right now for environmental scientists. As green businesses pop up every day, environmental scientists will have both the financial support for research and the market interest for producing environmentally friendly products. It is estimated that the field of environmental science will grow by an amazing 25% over the next decade. An average salary for a degree holder in environmental science is about $56,000.
