What got you interested in teaching online?

I got interested in teaching online when I was working on my dissertation. It gave me the income I needed to work on my dissertation and gave me the opportunity to work from home. It gave me more flexibility.

What course management system does Post University use?

Post University uses Blackboard. Sometimes I do [provide video or audio lectures]. I also send students specific materials that will help them in the class. The courses are asynchronous, [meaning students may log in and complete their work at anytime].

What about textbooks? Are they regular textbooks or e-textbooks?

The students use regular textbooks, and [they usually] order them through the school.

What kind of homework assignments do you give your online students? Can you name an example or two?

I usually give them assignments that relate to the topic we’re studying at the time. I give them some materials they will have to research for a big project. A lot of it has to relate to the course, and I want the assignments to get students to think outside the box.

Can you give me an example of, say, a management assignment you gave out recently?

I would have them write a paper on how human resource management applies in the past, present, and future. I would tell them to use examples and documentation on how the past and present are different and alike and to talk about what they believe will be the future of human resource management.

I [also] have team projects that I do. I have teams set up that I usually assign at the beginning of a class. I give the students an outline and give them an area where they can form and discuss the project. I’ll follow up with them to see if they are working together well. I’ll see if they have a team leader, communicate with that team leader to make sure everything is going well, and talk with other team members, as well. I generally check in to the team boxes to see that everyone is working and to see that each team member is doing their role.

What are the exams like at Post University? Are they like traditional exams you’d get at a brick-and-mortar college, or do essays and projects serve as exams?

We do traditional exams. We do have online exams, and students will have a certain amount of time each week to get those exams done. They might be multiple choice, true or false, fill in the blank, etc.

How does going to college online at Post University compare with going to college on a traditional, brick-and-mortar campus? Is the material just as rigorous?

The material is just the same. Students have more flexibility in the time in which they do their work, as opposed to having a specific time they have to go to the classroom. They also have various time limits in which to complete their work.

Are students required to participate in online discussions?

Students must participate in discussion to get the maximum points in a course. [When they contribute to a discussion], it has to be a substantial post, and they must also engage other students in the discussion.

What kind of students do you mainly have in your classes?

I see a variety, but I see mostly students who are working full time. They do have the opportunity to complete their education while working, so that’s a big advantage for students.

What would you say defines a successful online student?

An online student who is very attentive and always asks questions about the specifics on the exams and tests. They are a good team player whenever they have to work on teams and are very efficient in doing their own work. [It would be] someone who regularly participates in discussion and has a dialogue with other students and myself in the classroom.

What sets Post University apart from other online universities? What are its unique advantages?

They are customer service-based and student-based. They put a lot of emphasis in getting students’ [questions] answered within a day. Communication between student and instructor is very important in an online environment, and Post University is good at promoting that.
