Barbara Chappell
Former Kaplan adjunct professor
Kaplan University

Barbara Chappell has over a decade of experience in the e-learning industry, but it wasn’t until 2004, when she earned her Ph.D. in organizational psychology, that she made the decision to make a career out of educating others. After applying for online teaching positions at 35 different schools, she was able to obtain a job, and once she had that job, she applied to more. Using the online learning medium, she has taught psychology, business, and college prep courses. When Kaplan University had an opening in her area of interest, Chappell felt drawn to teach there and was impressed by its unique learning platform, use of technology, and convenient instructional methods. While she taught online courses for Kaplan for a couple of years, Chappell now is an independent e-learning professional working as a professor at various schools.

What about Kaplan’s online model did you find unique from other schools?

The learning platform was different from any I had ever seen, and they set up all classroom activities for the instructors.

What types of courses did you teach at Kaplan University?

I taught an introduction to college course. This course taught students skills such as completing assignments on time, using critical thinking skills, writing a resume, and using the discussion boards.

What were your responsibilities as an instructor of this course?

I only had to grade work and participate in the discussions, as well as one live chat per week.

What are Kaplan University’s methods for teaching online?

At the time I taught there, the main method of teaching was discussions and live chats, which were mandatory.

In what ways was the LMS beneficial in facilitating online instruction?

Since everything was already set up, I was free to interact with students.

What types of assignments did you give students in your classes?

I gave my students reading and writing assignments. They also had group projects, but no exams.

What types of skills and abilities did the curriculum allow them to develop?

Students develop skills for writing and interacting with others. They also learn how to write a resume and cover letter and gain job interview skills. Hopefully, with the knowledge gained from this course, they can find a job.

As an online instructor how much interaction did you have with students?

I had quite a bit of interaction, especially since we had a live chat weekly.

In what ways were you able to provide one-on-one instruction, group interaction, and personal feedback?

By using the grade book and chat sessions. We were also required to call all students at least once per session.

Do you feel as if the subject matter in the courses you taught translated well in an online environment?

Yes, and I also have I taught business and psychology, and those are suited for online as well. I don’t believe that public speaking or math would be suitable.

Given your experience there, what is it about Kaplan University that makes it one of the best online institutions?

What makes Kaplan University stand out is its technology and dedication to students.
