Public administrators work with organizations and other entities that work for the public, from the city, state and national government to education, public medicine and non-profit organizations. Public administrators can also work in with businesses that work directly with the public. In training to be an administrator, degree seekers will develop their interpersonal and leadership skills and will gain an understanding of top down organizational structures, learning how to work with many levels of what can be a complicated entity. Public administrators are problem solvers and dedicated to carrying out both short and long term projects that will serve the interest of the public. Although the maximization of profits are not necessarily the top priority, public administrators must develop a strong aptitude for working within a budget to accomplish a goal. Public administrators must also be able to communicate well with their constituents with the goal of finding out what the public needs and developing a program to serve those needs.

Public administrators need to have a strong background in finance, with a focus on financial planning, management, economics and communication. All skills are aimed at a public administrator’s ability to recognize areas that need to be improved, develop strategies to address those areas and implement the strategy to completion. Courses focus on leadership skills and negotiation, all the while applying general business ideas specifically to the public forum. Given the immense amount of data which must be managed by public administrators, classes in information management, statistics and statistical analysis, and computers are also often offered.

Job Outlook

Receiving a degree in public administration can open up doors to all levels of government and to the organizations that provide the services the government is charged with funding, from schools and colleges to hospitals and public works companies. Government agencies and other entities serving the public are always looking for talented and experienced individuals with the range of skills to bring energy, innovation and leadership to the workplace. Public administrators’ salaries depend on the field in which they work, but average incomes for example are around $40,000 for an urban planner, $50,000 for grant writers, $80,000 for human resources managers in public administration positions, nearly $150,000 for school superintendants, and for judges (which requires a legal education as well) around $175,000.
