The Best College Football Blogs of 2012

Posted on Tuesday July 17, 2012 by Staff Writers

The NFL may get a bit more attention from the media, but the NCAA arguably has more rabid fans who are willing to create and maintain a blog dedicated to football. What sets the best blogs apart from the rest are their posting new articles frequently, covering the stuff ESPN won’t touch, and being consistently entertaining; otherwise, readers would be just as well off reading a newspaper (shudder). To get you fired up for the season opener, here are our choices for the 20 best college football blogs on the web today.

  1. Kegs ‘N Eggs:

Basically, if you like Deadspin, you’ll like Kegs ‘N Eggs. You can get your injury reports and game breakdowns from ESPN; you come to KNE for parody videos, stories on the wild lives of star college athletes, and all the news that’s not fit to print anywhere else.

  2. Eye on College Football:

If you like your college football reading with a minimum of snark and comparisons of which colleges have the hottest cheerleaders, CBSSports.com has this offering for you. It’s an especially good aggregator of recruiting news, as well as conference stories from “embedded” journalists around the nation.

  3. Dr. Saturday:

Yahoo! Sports hosts the football commentary of blogger Graham Watson, the titular doctor. Maybe with her engaging articles she can help you too to learn to stop worrying and love the BCS.

  4. In the Bleachers:

This is the place to find the podcasts of former college player Michael Felder and seasoned journalist Patrick Johnston. The two give you their unfiltered thoughts on game plans, the Heisman watch, recruiting, and more.

  5. College Football Nation:

ESPN rounded up talented bloggers from all the major conferences and united them in one killer blog. They’ve got the knowledge of the game you’d expect of ESPN writers, and the freedom to give you their informed opinion on all the college football news you find on the rest of the site.

  6. Every Day Should Be Saturday:

It started out in 2009 with a focus on Florida Gator football. Now EDSBS is an experienced vet in the college football blogosphere, but it hasn’t lost its youthfulness. Perusing today’s headlines we find news stories on “shirtless fighting” arrests for Texas A&M players, “Box Scores of Yesteryear,” and a slew of articles from parent sports site SBNation.

  7. College Gridiron 365:

Kudos to the Orlando Sentinel for maintaining this solid college football blog, what with the whole newspapers-are-dying thing. Obviously there’s a bent for news on Florida teams, but there are also nice articles about what players to watch around the country, in-depth team breakdowns, and conference news (and not just the SEC).

  8. BCS Know How:

We fans finally got a playoff, but don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a whole new BCS. For staying up on what you need to know about the computer polls and rankings, plus Heisman watch and weekly updates, save this URL as a favorite.

  9. College Football Section:

During the off-season, college baseball and basketball and pictures of “chicks” find their way onto this blog, but come September, it’s a great source for college gridiron news and (mostly unbiased) views. CFS has really hit its stride since teaming up with popular sports site Yardbarker.

  10. Shirts with Random Triangles:

The puzzling tagline for this blog is “Embarrassing SEC quarterbacks since 2009.” We aren’t sure how that gets accomplished exactly, but we do know blogger Wright Bran is a skilled curator of breaking college football news from all over the Internet.

  11. Football Study Hall:

Another member of the SBNation family, this blog is for “nerds who don’t love baseball.” It’s just over a year old, but blogger Bill C. is an experienced writer who ties his penchant for stats and metrics to his love of football.

  12. Your Best 11:

Bleacher Report is always good for an informative sports article or entertaining “best of” list that you can’t find anywhere else on the web. Your Best 11 is edited by Kegs ‘N Eggs founder Adam Kramer and offers the same caliber of fun articles written by people who love sports as BR.

  13. Phil Steele’s College Football Blog:

Phil Steele is a sportswriter for the Orlando Sentinel and is widely regarded for his prognosticating accuracy in the world of college football. His blog is the place to get free access to his knowledge of stats and projections, especially if, say, you wanted to make a friendly wager on a match.

Knowing full well the dangers of wading into such a debate, these are our picks for the best football team-focused blog in each major conference.

  1. Block O Nation:

Named for the student cheering section of Ohio Stadium, this blog is Buckeye football central. It’s got a great layout and thorough articles, and you can practically feel the intense love of OSU football through the screen. It’s our pick for the best of the Big 10 conference … sorry, Michigan.

  2. Gator Tailgating:

In a very crowded and solid field of SEC blogs, our favorite is a bit of a divergence from the usual college gridiron blog, and maybe that’s why we like it. Here, you get articles about Florida football, but the focus is on bringing fans together to meet, share recipes, post pics and messages, and set up killer tailgates.

  3. The Seventh Floor:

For the Atlantic Coast Conference, this University of Miami football-only blog gets our seal of approval. It may look like other SBNation blogs, but this our favorite place to find out which Hurricane has been arrested or suspended today.

  4. TrojanWire:

USC football is the focus here on T-Wire, although other sports news can be had, along with surf reports, campus updates, and pictures of the Song Girls (with their own dedicated section). But with links to good interviews, news on the 2012 season and Trojan alumni, and Lane Effing Kiffin, it’s tops for the Pac10 12.

  5. Blatant Homerism:

They may be homers, but at least the writers behind this Oklahoma Sooner-loving blog make no pretense of being anything else. The blog even has its own constitution, in which the BCS system is actually defended. They cover the rest of college football as well, well enough to earn our choice as the Big 12′s best blog.

  6. Pitt Blather:

For one more season anyway, Pitt is part of the Big East. And while this blog leaves something to be desired in the aesthetics department, the staff (Chas and Reed) does a great job of keeping Pittsburgh fans in the know about football and basketball developments.

  7. Her Loyal Sons:

Notre Dame is probably the first team people think of for teams without a conference, and this blog is the best of the Fighting Irish faithful. The guys behind it love the same woman and talking Irish football.
