Every college student dreams of finally finishing off years of hard work and getting a great post-college job as a reward. But in a tight job market, not every new graduate gets to realize that dream. So what do you do when you just can’t find a job after college? Here are a few suggestions.
Keep looking. Even if the situation seems bleak, you have to keep at it if you want things to get better. Giving up will lead you nowhere, but there’s always hope in truding on. You never know when you’re just an interview away from a great job. Stick to it and don’t let yourself become discouraged.
Explore alternative careers. You may have gone to school with a certain career in mind, but if that particular field isn’t doing well now, it’s time to look into other options. Consider other types of careers that you may be qualified for based on your education and experience. You may find that you enjoy your new career, or you can just wait out the tough times in this job until your career of choice is a more viable option.
Take on an internship. You may or may not get paid, but even after graduation, internships can help you get your foot in the door at a great company. Even if you don’t get hired where you work, the experience that you can put on your resume will help make you more qualified for positions elsewhere.
Consider your financial situation. Unless you’re living on a generous trust fund or family allowance, chances are it’s going to be difficult getting by without a job. While you’re waiting it out, consider what you can do to make your life more affordable, like living with a roommate or even your parents for a short while.
Join a service program. If the job situation is completely bleak, you may want to consider joining the Peace Corps or even the military, and then coming back to reassess the job market in a few years. These service programs can provide you with experience, and even help you pay off your student loans while you work.
It’s rough trying to get hired in a tight job market after college, but you do have options. Stay positive and think carefully about what you want to do in order to find your success.
