How You Can Get Involved on Campus

Posted on Monday July 5, 2010 by

Your college campus may seem huge and full of strangers, but you’d be surprised how much smaller it can feel if you simply take the time to get involved. Join groups, take advantage of opportunities, and participate in life on your college campus to make the most of your time. Here are a few of the ways that you can get involved while you’re in college.

Join a sports team. You don’t have to be the star quarterback to be a part of college athletics. Think about sports you’re interested in and maybe even good at, like basketball, the swim team, or even becoming a mascot. College athletics offer a great way to meet other students and have a fun physical activity. You might even be able to get a scholarship for your hard work.

Know the school’s calendar. Keep an eye out for events on campus, like games, school plays, concerts, festivals, and more. Talk to your roommate, classmates or friends to find out if they’d like to accompany you to these events and see if they are any fun.

Check out clubs and organizations in your interest area. Talk to your professors or advisors about any groups that are a part of your area of study. You may also want to look into clubs that take part in your personal interests, like photography or running.

Be available. When you participate in events, teams, groups, and more, take the time to make yourself available to others. Stay late after the meeting is over to mingle with other group members and leaders. Volunteer to help out and take on responsibilities that you know you can handle. Speak up during meetings and be an active member of any group you join.

Become a leader. Leadership is enriching to both your life and career. Future employers will be more likely to hire those who have demonstrated a leadership ability, and spending time as a leader in college can help you prepare for leadership opportunities in the future. These positions allow you to more fully experience campus involvement, and can teach you valuable lessons for life.

No matter what you choose to do, getting involved on campus is a great idea. You can spend your time meeting others, doing what you love, and maybe even making a difference. Find your great group on campus today.
