Best Online Schools for Returning Students

Posted on Tuesday June 29, 2010 by

Online colleges and for-profit institutions were originally created with the intention of attracting former students back to school for either additional degrees or the final completion of an initial degree.  Since this point, online schools have flourished and have instead attracted a new type of student who previously would not have attended a college at all had this opportunity not arisen.  However, online schools remain adamant in their quest to attract former students and have maintained a helpful curriculum for those students who have some credits under their belt.  More than that, online schools have planned out a course to attract more students than ever before in the coming years, a feat that could result in the highest percentage of educated adults our country has ever seen.

The best online schools for these students are typically the larger online universities who are able to better place students in a program that will meet their exact needs.  University of Phoenix and Kaplan University were created for these types of students – the older adult who needs a new degree because of a work condition or an older adult who did not have time to finish a degree when they were younger because of extraneous circumstances.  Whatever the case, these schools were able to provide degree programs to these students regardless of the length of time they were previously in school.

Returning students continue to make up a large percentage of online schools even as their population has grown to epic proportions.  Their advertisements appeal directly to this demographic of student – students who do not have time for traditional college classes, but need another year or two of their degree program to earn their degree.  It’s an excellent marketing tool, largely because so many Americans are too caught up in their lives to think about returning back to school.  Online colleges instead present the viable and cost-efficient alternative of returning to school from the comfort of their own home.  This tool has been instrumental in appealing to the baby-boomer generation onward along with various catch phrases – ‘It is never too late to earn a college degree!’

The best online schools for returning students will no doubt change in the coming years as new schools open and others close, but the larger giant corporations like University of Phoenix seem set to continue on their current path of education.  With their continued federal backing, it seems like students will continue to be able to earn degrees from home, and our dream of a better-educated country will become a reality.
