Now that you’ve gotten accepted to your school, the challenge of getting settled in is on. Your first few weeks or even months of college may be rough as you adjust to college life, but if you plan ahead, you can make the transition as painless as possible. Read on to learn about some of the things you can do to get settled in to life in college.
Find your classrooms. As soon as your get your course schedule, take a look at where the courses are located and visit them before it’s time to go to class. You can save yourself the frustration and embarrassment of getting lost on the first day of class by getting things figured out ahead of time.
Take care of your supplies early on. It may not be necessary to get all of your supplies right away, but if you can get ahold of your syllabus early, find out which books you’ll be reading at the beginning of the semester, and buy them, along with basic supplies like pens, pencils and notebooks, at least a few weeks before school gets started. That way, you’ll be prepared when you go to class and you won’t have to join the textbook rush of the first week on campus.
Go to orientations and freshman activities. Yes, they may be lame, yes, you may find them a waste of time, but school activities for freshmen can be helpful. They usually offer useful information, but more importantly, they are often well-attended and will provide you with an opportunity to get to know other students.
Get connected early on. Using the Internet, it’s really easy to meet other students before you even step on campus. Find other students on Facebook, school pages, and more. Start an online group and get to know other students. You may even find that there are other students who live nearby that you can meet and make friends with before school starts. You should also make every effort you can to meet others when you actually get on campus-introduce yourself to others in the dorms, talk to your classmates, and get to know your roommate.
Scout out extracurricular activities. Think about the activities you’d like to take part in, like sports, Greek life, and clubs. If you’re thinking about getting involved, try to sit in on a meeting or talk to someone who is a part of that group.
College life is a big transition, but if you take the right approach, it can be exciting instead of intimidating. With the help of these tips, you can get settled in quickly and easily.
