Getting the Financial Aid You Need

Posted on Saturday June 12, 2010 by

Financial aid is a concern for just about every student. Even if you have the resources to pay for college out of pocket, there’s always room for a little help. Of course, financial aid is especially important to those who are not able to afford hefty tuition bills as they come. Finding the financial aid you need or want doesn’t have to be difficult, and we’ll take a look at how to get it here.

Start early. With financial aid, the early bird truly gets the worm. Don’t wait until the end of your senior year to start the process. Make plans as soon as you’ve started getting ready for college, as early as your junior year. By increasing the amount of time you have to look for financial aid, you’ll give yourself many more options and opportunities than you would have otherwise. Additionally, it will be much easier to meet deadlines, complete essays, get loans approved, and make sure that all of your paperwork is perfectly done.

Work your way down. Since you’re starting early, you have the opportunity to pluck the most helpful forms of financial aid. Early on, focus on getting grants and scholarships, then take a look at federal and private student loans to fill in the gap between awards and what you can afford to pay. You can also take a look at work-study programs early, but you may have to wait until closer to the start of college to find actual opportunities that you can fill.

Ask for help. You and your family don’t have to walk the financial aid road alone. There are so many resources available to students who are in need of financial aid. Talk to your high school advisor about scholarships and grants available to students at your school, and ask for advice on your financial aid search. Once you’ve been accepted to your college, you can also find a great resource in your school’s financial aid office. They will likely have extensive financial aid resources for you to learn about and take advantage of. Also, don’t forget your local librarian. She can help you find books and other tools that can be of great assistance in your search.

Finding financial aid for college can be a daunting task, but if you start early and use smart strategies, just about any student can find success. Good luck with your search!
