As long as colleges have been in existence, the college party has been around. It’s pretty simple: if you have a bunch of young people in the same place, they are going to find a way to have a good time. Certainly the parties have changed complexion over the years, but there are a few mainstays that have stood the test of time: drinking, dancing, and flirting. If you went back in time to 1950, 1900, or whenever, you would find these three elements present at any college party. They may look different, but the essence would still be the same. In the 21st century, college parties have certainly gotten more elaborate. Here is a look at some of the more popular themes on campuses around the country.
Decade Parties have become wildly popular. The theme of the night will be a certain decade. For instance, at a ’60s party, students will dress like hippies and espouse the tenets of peace and love. At an ’80s party, the girls will be all about big hair and jean jackets. Only ’80s music can be played.
Golf Pros and Tennis Ho’s Parties feature the guys dressed like golfers with the girls dressed in skimpy tennis outfits. Remember that many college students set money aside for party outfits, so the costumes can get pretty creative. Another slant to this party is the Quarterback and Cheerleader Party where the guys dress as football players and the girls as cheerleaders.
The Toga Party is an old fraternity standby. Made wildly popular in Animal House by John Belushi, this theme is here to stay. Everyone attending the party is to dress in a toga. You can imagine that some of the togas are more revealing than others. It’s debatable whether Socrates would approve of this evolution of his attire.
The Halloween Party is one of the highlights of the year. The creativity displayed by party-goers is off the charts. The costumes range from the hilarious to the sexy to the creepy. It seems like students channel their younger selves and put a unique twist on the costumes of their youth.
Casino Parties have become increasingly popular as poker has become fashionable across college campuses. People attending this party will typically dress like "high rollers" and gamble on a wide range of games.
Remember to enjoy these parties in a sensible manner. One of the worst things you can do is ruin your semester over a night of bad decisions. Enjoy yourself!
