Study after study has indicated that online learning is becoming a more suitable option for students of any age, making a deep impact on grade schoolers as they grow up with online classes. Both the Washington Post and the New York Times have run articles featuring the new feasibility of online schools as a popular alternative in the future. While these articles typically focus on the possibility of increased online secondary schools, these students will one day be those who enroll in online colleges as the result of their early introduction to online education.
Online schools have swept the nation because of their ability to appeal to students who are not receiving the classes or attention they need within their own public school. Florida’s Virtual School allows AP students to take extra courses online that may not be offered at their high school, thereby receiving college credit if they pass the AP test (and many studies have indicated that the passing rate is higher through online courses than traditional courses). This transfers to online college learning, indicating that online colleges afford students different opportunities than traditional schools offer. The traditional old-fashioned red brick schoolhouse ideal is no longer the norm and has since been replaced by a computer and an internet connection.
While there are still many critics of online education, and traditional colleges continue to enroll the same amounts of students, online college has emerged as a way to attract those students who otherwise would not attend classes. It is a new chance for these students to earn a degree, on their own terms. The ability to develop your own schedule to work around your career schedule, and take as many (or as few) classes as you want, has presented many students with a new option for education.
More of our daily activities are now conducted through the internet, and it is no surprise that schooling has joined this list as well. Online schools are not the robotic-type of education that many parents dread, but are instead valuable assets for students who want to take courses that are not offered or who simply perform ahead or behind many of the students in their classes. Online education works to meet each individual students’ needs and therefore is revolutionary in itself. Traditional schools will continue to attract students and continue to be a necessary part of our society, but online education now offers an alternative form of schooling for students who may not be getting everything they need from traditional classes.
