Studying Abroad Enhances Your College Experience

Posted on Tuesday September 30, 2008 by

College is a time for young men and women to step out of their shells and explore the world that surrounds them. It’s not only a chance to leave the hometown or home state, but at most universities, it’s an opportunity to explore faraway lands. Studying abroad can be a life-changing experience. Students immerse themselves into a new culture under the guidance of professors who have studied it for years.

Students who are learning a foreign language get to put their skills to use during their daily activities. They get to hear it directly from the native speakers – there isn’t a better way to become more fluent. If you don’t speak the language well, insight is still gained into customs, beliefs and values. You become familiar with how their world works by hearing their opinions and worldviews. Understanding a new perspective can be an eye-opening experience and perhaps it’ll change your own. Such exchanges usually don’t occur inside a classroom on campus. These experiences are valuable to students majoring in sociology, anthropology, international relations, religious studies, history and philosophy. Even an engineer can gain personal value from living within a new culture. But if you desire to gain more practical skills in the process, many universities ensure their students participate in programs related to their major. For example, that engineer might contribute to a research project in downtown Barcelona, while a pre-med major helps out at a local clinic in the nearby town of Sant Adria de Besos.

The trip usually involves a group of students from the same university, so new friends are made while having loads of fun. During the days you aren’t studying inside the classroom, you can visit the local restaurant and bars and sample the country’s tastiest dishes and beers. If you aren’t 21-years-old yet, it’s probably not a problem. Many countries have more relaxed laws pertaining to alcohol than the U.S. Students should also travel to the scenic beaches and mountainsides that you aren’t scheduled to visit as a part of the program. It may be the only time you ever set foot in the country, so you should take every opportunity to enjoy what it has to offer.

Whether you study abroad for two weeks, a month or an entire academic term, you’re sure to come away with no regrets. It’s a chance to break out of your academic routine as a college student, while earning course credit that will go toward your degree.
