The Power of the Internship for Young College Students
The job market is tougher than usual for young college graduates, especially when there is competition with professionals looking for work after being laid off. Students do not have the luxury of depending on there being open entry-level positions that most recent college graduates usually get, as even these positions are facing fierce competition from other graduates as well as professionals vying for the same spot. Yet, there is good news for those who are not lucky enough to snag a high-paying job right out of school. Recent graduates can still plan ahead to gain an edge over the competition by participating in an internship while they wait for the job market to pick back up.
Internships are a great way to gain valuable work experience. Though having the necessary education is important in finding a job, many employers also look for candidates with plenty of previous job experience. Unfortunately, not too many recent graduates have such experience due to schooling, so looking into an internship is a good way for fairly inexperienced students to build their work resumes. Students are less likely to face fierce competition for internship positions because those positions are typically unpaid or low-paying. While this may sound like a bad thing, one should keep in mind that many students, unlike professionals with their own homes and families to care for, can afford to work in unpaid positions for a little while because they have the option of moving back in with their parents until they find their feet.
In addition, internship opportunities are popping up everywhere as businesses downsize their staffs to cut costs. With a smaller staff, interns now have more responsibilities beyond brewing the morning’s coffee. Interns are now more likely to become valuable members of an organization and work with professionals on projects, thereby gaining the hands-on skills that will be expected of them once they work professionally. Those who participate in internships will also be seen as dedicated and relevant in comparison to students who take a break for months before returning to the job hunt. It shows that the graduate is committed to keeping busy and takes work seriously, which are admirable traits in a potential employee. All in all, recent college graduates have the luxury of being able to take on internships while the economy struggles to recover so they should take advantage of that opportunity.
