After the giddy "I can’t believe I’m going to college" feeling has worn off (or at least died down), the reality of the situation begins to sink in. You have a lot of things to take care of before you can begin your new educational journey as a university student. For those who are attending a school at home, the change from high school to university life will not be too drastic. However, for those who are attending a school that requires packing up and moving out of the house, the preparations necessary to do so may be entirely overwhelming. Yet, there are ways to make moving from your parent’s house to your new dorm room as hassle-free as possible.
Timing is important in the moving process. You need to allow yourself plenty of time to move, unpack, and get acclimated to your new life on campus. Typically, this will take at least three days if you are diligent about unpacking as quickly as possible. If you need to ship things to your dorm, be sure to time it correctly so that your shipped belongings arrive roughly when you do so that you are not without living essentials for too long. In addition, it would also be helpful to communicate with your future roommate about when he or she is arriving so that you can plan to arrive either earlier or later to avoid causing too much chaos with two people trying to move into a tiny dorm room at the same time.
Bringing in reinforcements to help you move is also a good idea. Though you should pack light and not bring too many items from home due to the sheer size restrictions of the dorm rooms, you will inevitably be bringing more than you can easily handle on your own. Bring at least one other person with you, whether it is a parent or a friend, to help you move boxes and unpack them. If you are flying to your school, educate yourself on airport rules and regulations so that both you and your moving partner can fly through security check points without any issues. If you are driving, ensure that you know the best routes to the school as well as some alternative routes in case a road is blocked off. Moving is a stressful and chaotic occasion, but if you time it right, pack light, and bring a moving partner, your experience will be better than most other college students moving away from home for the first time.
